Town Of Greeneville To Begin City Manager Search With MTAS
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterEmail

The Town of Greeneville will officially begin the search for a new City Manager next week.

Discussion and consideration to approve the Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) to conduct the search process is on the agenda for the meeting of the City Council at 4 pm Tuesday, October 7th .

In the agenda package released Thursday afternoon, a letter from Mayor Cal Doty to department heads outlines plans for the search, including one-on-one conversations for their input on the matter.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to reach out and start a conversation about our next steps in hiring a new city manager.
This is an important decision for our community, and I’m excited for us to work together on
finding the right person for the job.

I’ve been talking with Pete Auger from MTAS about helping guide us through the search. Pete
has a lot of experience with municipal recruitment, and I think he’ll be a great resource to make
sure we approach this process thoughtfully and thoroughly.

Here’s the plan for the first step:
Pete will be setting up one-on-one conversations with each of you in the next few weeks. These
will be informal but focused discussions where he’ll gather your thoughts on:
• The key qualities and experience we’re looking for in a new city manager
• How we want stakeholders involved in the process
• Any updates we might want to make to the job description
• Ideas for how we can attract a strong pool of candidates
• Who should be part of the group that reviews and ranks applicants

Each conversation will take about two hours, and Pete will contact you directly to find a time
that works best for you. Once those individual meetings are finished, we’ll all come together for
a workshop to pull everyone’s input together and map out our next steps.

Before your meeting with Pete, it might be helpful to think about a few things:

• Your vision for what the city manager’s role should look like
• The skills or experience you feel are most important
• The key challenges you think our next manager should focus on
• Any ideas or concerns about the search process itself

After we’ve had a chance to share our thoughts and Pete compiles everything, we’ll work
together in that workshop to finalize the job description, set a timeline, and agree on how we’ll
handle the selection process.

Thank you all for the work you’re putting into this. I know we’ll find the right person to help
lead our city forward, and I’m looking forward to working with each of you on this process.

If you have any questions or suggestions before Pete reaches out, please don’t hesitate to get in
touch.

Best,
Cal

Cathy Osborne continues to serve as interim City Manager during the search process following the resignation of Todd Smith after a board vote calling for his resignation.

Several other items are on the agenda for the Tuesday meeting in the G. Thomas Love Board Room at the GEA building.  The Beer Board will meet afterwards.

The complete agendas for both meetings are listed below:
