The damaged flagpole at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will need to be replaced.
The pole had stood over the cemetery since 1908, but was severely damaged during a storm in May. The pole, which was assembled in four sections, had damage and metal fatigue in each section which made repair impossible.
Park Superintendent Aaron Shandor said in a statement that in order to find a suitable replacement for the damaged pole, there may need to be re-engineering of the original concrete base in order to meet modern safety standards.
Plans are underway to put up a temporary flagpole that will be shorter than the original, and it will remain in place until the permanent flagpole is created and installed.
