A man had to be rescued from a ravine following a single-vehicle crash Thursday night along the Asheville Highway, according to a report from the South Greene Volunteer Fire Department.

The wreck occurred in the 11000 block of the Asheville Highway around 8:20 Thursday evening. The vehicle was traveling northbound, left the roadway as it entered a curve, then passed between an embankment and guardrail before coming to rest at the bottom of the ravine.
The driver was found lying partially outside the window. Crews from South Greene, Rescue Squad and EMS had to construct a pulley system, then hoisted the injured man about 50 feet to the roadway. The victim was taken to an ambulance and then flown to Johnson City via Highlands from a landing zone at South Greene High School.
Fortunately for the victim, there was a witness to the crash. There was little evidence on the roadway that a crash had occurred, and the vehicle was barely visible from the roadway.
Responding agencies besides the South Greene VFD included the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad, EMS, the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol. The THP is investigating the wreck.
