The Greeneville City Council met yesterday afternoon and discussed the next steps in their Strategic Plan for projects in Greeneville, geared toward gateway improvements in town and phase 2 of the redevelopment project.
City Manager Todd Smith said the bulk of the redevelopment in downtown is done and the purpose of the discussion was to determine what the focus should be moving forward. Gateway improvements in town according to the Strategic Plan include highlighting the entrances to our community like the airport, downtown, city limits etc. It should be low maintenance, attractive, have good lighting, economical murals, landscaping, flowers, and water features.
Phase 2 of the redevelopment project includes concentrating on pedestrian access, sidewalks, and connectivity in town. Smith said the purpose is to try and connect key resources and visitor spots, which starts at the Big Springs at the Greeneville Greene County Library, continues through College Street, and through the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site. Smith also said the council should consider a permanent structure for the Farmers Market.
Both options are necessary and will happen but there is currently no budget for the project. The council members were split between both options but after further discussion, Smith believes he has the information he needs to move forward. He said he will look at getting a plan together and a budget for Fiscal Year 2025, where they will focus on the second phase of the redevelopment project downtown.
