Greeneville City Council agreed to the purchase of land along Jeff Woods Memorial Drive for possible use as a school during its meeting Tuesday afternoon.
The agreement with SMN Investments would allow the Town to purchase around 53 acres of land at a cost of $1.81 million by November 1.
The council also entered into an agreement with Mattern & Craig of Kingsport to design a traffic signal that will be installed at the intersection of 11-E and Serral Drive, at a cost of $45,000.
Also approved was an interlocal agreement between the Town of Greeneville, the City of Tusculum, Greene County and the Industrial Development Board related to the former Greene Valley Developmental Center property. The agreement would split extra funding for the IDB evenly among the three municipalities.
A bid for roof repair at Fire Station 1 was approved along with the purchase of five Ford Explorer Police Interceptors. Council rejected an effort to add the keeping of domesticated chickens to the Municipal Code, leaving intact the current ordinance that prohibits keeping fowl within 1,000 feet of a residence.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, City Council approved an ordinance that would require contractors to place identification signage and phone numbers on their vehicles while conducting work within public rights-of-way.
