An Afton woman reported this week to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department she was scammed out of $1,000.
The Ripley Island Road woman said she received an email informing her someone was trying to get money from her account. The victim called a number on the email and two men who claimed to work for PayPal answered the phone.
The victim said they told her to go to Walgreens and get two Target gift cards with the amount of $499 on each card. The suspects reportedly told her if she got those cards, they would be able to put the money back into her account. The victim said the two men stayed on the phone with her the whole time and she gave them the numbers off the gift cards.
The woman later went to her bank and was advised to file a police report.
