Michael Crum, former Assistant Chief of Police is suing the Town of Greeneville for $1.25 M in order to recover damages and reinstatement of employment after being terminated back in December 2021.
Crum was employed as the Assistant Chief of Police for the Town of Greeneville for 31 years and according to the US District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee Greeneville Division, he was terminated December 6, 2021 for allegations of hostile work environment and discrimination.
According to the complaint by Crum, the Town of Greeneville acted in disregard to his rights secured under the constitution. In September 2021, a “Department Morale Survey” was provided to employees of the Police Department. The survey’s reportedly were supposed to be anonymous and confidential and was to be reviewed by Human Resources. Various interviews were conducted as a result of that survey.
The Municipal Technical Advisory Service (MTAS) reviewed the surveys at the request of the City Administrator Todd Smith. The MTAS report allegedly only focused on negative opinions and disregarded the positive comments of former Assistant Chief Crum, resulting in his termination in December.
The complaint states Crum was not provided the opportunity to clear his name and reputation and he denies all allegations. It also states that due to this termination he was injured by the town of Greeneville with loss of compensation and benefits, loss in reputation and respect, loss of career opportunities, embarrassment, humiliation and mental anguish.
Crum is demanding damages against the town for lost wages, benefits, front pay and more in the amount of $1.25 M.
