Radio Greeneville, Inc. has been a source of community information since we signed on the air in 1946 with WGRV 1340 AM. Over the next three-quarters of a century, RGI has grown to serve the people of Greeneville and Greene County and keep them informed with local news.
We signed on the air on November 18, 1946, from the ballroom at the Brumley Hotel, now the location of the General Morgan Inn. The station was built and engineered by Paul O. Metcalfe. Paul served as the station’s general manager until his retirement in 1987. His son, Ronnie Metcalfe, took over as President and CEO until his death in 2021. Paul’s grandson, Ron P. Metcalfe, currently serves as the President, CEO, and General Manager. Paul’s wife Margaret, Ronnie’s wife Nellie, and Ron’s children — Abby and Jackson — have all worked at the station, making this a truly family-focused business with deep ties to the community.
In 1956, Radio Greeneville expanded its reach with the addition of an FM station. In 2001, we added an AM/FM combo and upgraded AM stations to the FM band in 2016. We now broadcast:
All of our stations are streamed online as well.
Since 1997, the station has offered free online news, pioneering digital journalism in the area and becoming the first local news outlet to do so. We prioritize stories that matter most — from government meetings and breaking news to weather and traffic alerts — especially during severe conditions.
Our team of reporters works within the community to bring you trustworthy, verified updates. We also share in your celebrations — like birthdays and awards — and your losses through local obituaries and memorial services.
Radio Greeneville is a vital resource for local school closings, road updates, and public safety information. We proudly support youth athletics, covering games from all five Greene County high schools and Tusculum University football and basketball, and the University of Tennessee Volunteerd and Lady Vols. We bring scores, highlights, and coverage from all seasons.
Whether on-air or online, Radio Greeneville is your go-to source for local information — built by family, powered by community.
