One person was flown to an area hospital for treatment following a single vehicle crash around 9:20 Wednesday night on the Newport Highway near Bowers Road.
A Greene County Sheriff’s Department report says the driver of the Mercedes-Benz ML 350, Charles Coakley was headed toward Newport when the crash occurred. Upon deputies’ arrival, Coakley was unresponsive. While in the ambulance however, deputies say he awoke long enough to say he “just took the curve too wide and ran off the roadway.” The vehicle struck a mailbox at 5210 Newport Highway.
Coakley was flown by Highlands Air Rescue to the Johnson City Medical Center for treatment of apparent head injuries.
