Greene County Schools recently restocked the shelves of its Magic Book Bus to help expand its reading collection for the community. A $2500 grant from the Horace Mann Educators Foundation to Greene Leaf, the foundation supporting Greene County Schools, supported the purchase of more than 900 books.
“The more books available, the more stops the two buses can make during the summer months and the more children who can be served with a wider selection of reading material,” said Misty Mercer, Greene County Schools Literacy Specialist. “This program improves access because it serves all children. While the books are borrowed, no child is fined or denied another book if they do not return one they borrow.”
Horace Mann agent Troy Watkins nominated the school for the Horace Mann Educators Foundation’s EmpowerED grant program which awarded $2,500 grants to 25 nonprofit, education-related organizations countrywide.
