A Newport Man was arrested for driving under the influence on Sunday around 4:30 AM.

According to the report, while on a patrol an officer noticed a truck that was stopped at the railroad tracks on West Church Street, near Loretta Street. After about a minute of not moving, the officer went to check on the driver, who was reportedly asleep at the wheel. The officer turned off the vehicle, removed the keys, and then woke up the driver identified as Shannon Shelton.

An odor of alcohol was detected coming from the vehicle. Shelton was also covered in mud; he stated the mud was from falling. He was allegedly unsteady on his feet, had slurred speech, and did poorly on field sobriety tests. He was arrested for driving under the influence and additionally charged for possession of a handgun while impaired.
