Tusculum University Associate Director of Athletic Communications, Jim Miller, will be honored by the College Sports Communicators with its prestigious 25-Year Award during the organization’s annual convention this summer in Las Vegas.

Miller has served at Tusculum University, a NCAA Division II school in Greeneville, Tennessee, for 13-plus years. Assisting in all aspects of the promotion and media relations for the University’s 23 intercollegiate sports, Miller is the primary media contact for men’s and women’s soccer, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s lacrosse, cross country and track and field.

Miller began at Tusculum as assistant SID in 2010 for several years, then spent four years as the news director at Radio Greeneville (WGRV, WIKQ, WSMG). He returned to Tusculum in the same role in January 2016, and was promoted to the position of Associate Director of Athletic Communications in July 2019.

His talents include providing play-by-play announcing for various Tusculum sporting events (including baseball, basketball, soccer and volleyball), for Greene County High School basketball games and for the nationally-recognized Andrew Johnson Bank Ladies Classic high school basketball tournament.

Miller was an integral member of the Tusculum athletic communications staff that earned the first-ever South Atlantic Conference Media Relations Staff of the Year honor in 2020.

His previous professional stops include work at all three NCAA divisional levels. Miller interned at the University of Delaware (1996-97) before serving as the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) sports information director (1997 to 1999). From 2000-07, he was the SID at Susquehanna (Pa.) University and then worked at Elizabethtown (Pa.) College for three years. He created the MAC’s first web page in 1998 and, at Elizabethtown, he developed their social networking pages and introduced live online stats for home events.

Dom Donnelly, Tusculum University Associate Athletic Director for Communications – “Jim is one of the most talented professionals in the business today. He has been a valuable member of the Tusculum Athletic Communications team for the past 13 years. His skills in accurate and precise statistics keeping and knowledge of the history of collegiate athletics is second to none.

Jim is also the best writer I have seen in my 30-plus years in the profession. Most importantly, he is a true and valued friend and I have treasured my association with him, his wife Kristina, and their kids, Avery and Colton. They have been a blessing to us at Tusculum and we are all very proud of Jim for receiving this recognition.”

Career Reflections From Jim Miller

“I have been fortunate to have a career where I still look forward to coming to work each day. I have had the honor of working with so many fantastic individuals throughout my career, but what continues to mean the most to me is seeing former student workers pursue this career and thrive. Being a mentor for the next generation is a role I will never take lightly.”

Professional Development and Career Advice

“Take time for yourself! Keeping yourself fresh both physically and mentally is critical.”

“I started in the days of fax machines and hand stats. This profession has evolved and will continue to evolve. Embrace and integrate the change as best as you can.”
