Greeneville will be the focus of the sports world today as a hearing is scheduled in Federal Court between the States of Tennessee and Virginia, the University of Tennessee and the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association).
National news and sports organizations from the major networks and even ESPN will be in town to cover the preliminary injunction hearing at the U. S. District Courthouse on Depot Street.
At issue is an NCAA investigation into UT’s recruiting practices and whether they violated NCAA rules regarding “Name, Image, and Likeness”. The so-called NIL rules allow college athletes to earn money for endorsements. For some, that amounts to millions of dollars. But NIL promises cannot be used in recruiting athletes.
The NCAA has alleged that UT has done just that, but the University has sued the NCAA, saying that the rules are ambiguous and ever changing. Joining in the suit is the State of Tennessee Attorney General and the State of Virginia.
Today’s hearing is for temporary injunction and is the first in many hearings that will be held here. For Greene County residents and those downtown, you can expect increased or altered traffic patterns today.
The hearing begins at 9:00 AM
