Greeneville City Council will vote to approve the start of broadband service by the Energy Authority and reconsider the vacancy on the Greeneville Municipal Airport Authority when it meets Tuesday, May 2 in the G. Thomas Love Boardroom.
In a letter to City Manager Todd Smith, Greeneville Energy Authority president Chuck Bowlin said that following the vote of its Board of Directors earlier this month, the City Council can complete the GEA’s legal obligations that must be met prior to offering broadband service.
At its April 18 meeting, the City Council voted to select former mayor W.T. Daniels to fill the five-year term on the board, but current mayor Calvin Doty vetoed the selection. In a letter to the Council, Doty explained that he felt that Daniels did not have the specialized skills of the two other candidates that would allow the authority to move forward in airport operations. Doty said that he supports the candidacy of Justin Jeffers for the position.
Also on the agenda is approval of renewal of the city’s maintenance agreement with TDOT through June, 2025, along with renewal of an agreement with the Third Judicial District Drug Task Force. Council will also vote on a resolution amending the membership of the regional Solid Waste Board.
Among the special event requests on the agenda is a Barbecue, Bluegrass and Brew event to be hosted by the Greeneville Exchange Club along West Depot Street on Saturday, August 26. A request to close part of West Church Street for Lyrics on the Lawn in July, and an Independence Day sign request for Thrive Church on North Rufe Taylor Road will also be considered. A vote will also be held to change the name of Legion Field on West Summer Street to Buddy Hawk Field.
Council will also vote on the nomination of Stan Ritter to a six-year term on the Industrial Development Board of Greene County and to confirm the nomination of Shane Hite to the Greeneville Energy Authority board during Tuesday’s meeting.
