The Tennessee Highway Patrol reports a woman was flown to an area hospital Sunday afternoon after a two-vehicle wreck on I-81 near mile marker 43 in Greeneville.
45-year-old Sarah Hassell was driving a southbound 2023 Nissan Rogue which then crossed the median and struck a 2022 International semi-truck head-on driven by 62-year-old Joe Boyd. The crash, which occurred around 12:30 pm stalled traffic in both directions for a period of time during the accident response and investigation.
Hassell was flown from the scene for treatment of reported serious injuries. Boyd was not injured in the wreck.
According to the THP report, charges against Hassell are pending the outcome of the investigation.
As emergency personnel were responding to that accident, a second wreck occurred around 2:20 pm at the 39 mile marker. A 2026 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by 27-year-old Travis Robertson of Florida and a 2023 Dodge Challenger driven by 39-year-old Zachary Marcovitch were stopped in traffic in the outside lane due to the previous accident. The tractor-trailer began to travel forward then rolled backward. It then struck the Dodge truck in the front. No injuries were reported in that accident and both vehicles were driven from the scene.
