Greene Mountain Wildfire Nearly 80% Contained

The wildfire burning in the Greene Mountain Road area of Greene County reached approximately 45 acres yesterday, according to an estimate given by US Forest Service officials after two days of trying to get a line around the blaze.

Firefighting crews say the fire is 80% contained. They will continue to conduct mop up activities to further strengthen control lines throughout the day. Greene Mountain Road remains open, however anyone using it should expect a high amount of fire vehicle traffic.

The US Forest Service was notified of a fire in the Greene Mountain Road area at approximately 2:45 PM on Friday. Forest Service crews responded and met with several Greene county agencies already on scene. Crews have worked throughout the weekend to combat the blaze with as many as 30 personnel, one bulldozer, multiple engines, and a Type I Helicopter working the fire. A “Type I” is the largest of the helicopters used in firefighting efforts. Despite high winds and steep terrain, progress was made and is being continued today.

Our area remains under a Special Weather Statement from the National Weather Service for Elevated Fire Risk. This is primarily due to the high winds and low humidities which could lead to significant fire growth. Exercise caution with any outdoor burning in the coming days and be sure to check state and local restrictions prior to burning.
