Crews from the Greeneville Water Commission were called out to repair a broken line Tuesday evening.
A line along Tusculum Boulevard near the Justis Drive intersection broke before 5:00 PM. Department employees opened fire hydrants in the area to reduce pressure to the line. The water outage affected Community Hospital and the Greeneville Commons.
Workers stood in knee deep water in nineteen degree temperatures to repair the line, which took almost until midnight. Greeneville Water Commission manager Laura White said that another line break happened on Spruce Street, with crews working until around 3:00 AM to repair that break.
Freezing ground because of the extreme cold can shift around lines, causing breaks.
Tyson Lamb. manager of Chuckey Utility district said his department has been responding to several calls from customers for frozen lines or meters. Chad Wampler of the Cross Anchor said his district has seen a slight increase in water usage, most likely from people letting their faucets run to keep from freezing.
