The Greeneville Water Commission is prepared for the extreme cold weather forecast for this week.

Superintendent Laura White said that the temporary pumps and pipes are more exposed than when they were inside the pump house that was destroyed by the floods of Hurricane Helene. White says a lot has changed since last winter, but that the Water Department crews have everything in place to ensure water keeps flowing.

For much of the fall, water department workers have kept the lines cleared of leaves and other debris, but now their attention will turn to ice. Ice and slush that forms in the river which could cause clogging of the intakes.

White reminded residents that it’s a good idea to leave a small trickle of water running to help keep your pipes from freezing.

Temperatures are expected to be no higher than 30 this week with a low around 20 tonight, and in the teens Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
