Greene County officials are warning of scam artists who are already in the area trying to take advantage of those affected by the floods.
Greene County Sheriff Wesley Holt and Greene County Mayor Kevin Morrison said that individuals have been going around with fake badges and ID tags saying they were with a government agency or otherwise providing flood relief. In some instances, the scammers have even told people they needed to confiscate certain items. Even Governor Bill Lee warned against these practices when he visited Greene County on Thursday.
While there are volunteers and services available for flood damages, NO OFFICIAL AGENCY is going door to door at this time offering or soliciting those services, and no government agency is going around trying to reclaim offered assistance or confiscate any items. Mayor Morrison said that anyone pretending to do so would have a special place at the Greene County Jail if they were caught trying to scam Greene Countians.
Sheriff Holt suggested taking a photograph of any ID badge presented, the person, their car, or license tag, and calling 9-1-1 to report them.
