The single digit lows in the middle of the week have caused some breaks in water lines as temperatures rose above freezing. But with another round of arctic weather coming, officials urge the public to keep an eye out for water line breaks.
Greeneville Water Superintendent Laura White said that line breaks were reported Thursday on Whirlwind Road, Jones Bridge Road, and on the old Erwin Highway. White asked the public to keep an eye out for water seeping up from areas or running across the ground and to report those to the Greeneville Water Commission. White said that even areas outside of the city limits of Greeneville can be reported to that department.
Low or no water pressure and standing or flowing water in unusual areas can be signs of an underground water line break. White said that her department can check suspected water line breaks.
Tyson Lamb of the Chuckey Utility reminds customers to keep an eye on barns, garages, and outbuildings for any line breaks. Chuckey dealt with two line breaks Thursday, including one on Ripley Island Road. Lamb said that line breaks on the customer side can also overburden the system, and urged customers to call as soon as they suspect a line break.
If you suspect a line break, call Greeneville Water Commission at 638-3148 or Chuckey Utility at 636-6905. Even areas outside those utilities may call, as these departments can direct responses to other utility districts.
