Walters State Offers Allied Health Noncredit Programs

• Clinical Medical Assistant, $3,000
Sevier County Campus – Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 24-April 9, 5:30-9 p.m.
Students train for a rewarding career assisting physicians in medical offices. Students learn how to prepare patients for examination, laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and many other skills. Upon completion of the course, students are eligible to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Exam.

• Certified Nursing Aide, $899
Sevier County Campus – Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 17-Dec. 10, 4-9 p.m.
Hancock High School – Tuesdays and Thursdays, Oct. 1-Dec. 19, 5-10 p.m.
This class trains students to become licensed certified nursing aides in Tennessee. Aides primarily work in long-term care facilities but may work in hospitals and for home health care agencies. General duties include assisting with meals or exercise, taking vital signs, performing personal hygiene and reporting any signs or symptoms that may indicate illness. An aide works under the supervision of a licensed nurse. This class includes 35 hours of supervised clinicals in a long-term care facility.

• Phlebotomy Technician, $1,500
Morristown Campus – Mondays and Wednesdays, Aug. 26-Nov. 6, 5:30-9 p.m.
Niswonger Campus – Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sept. 24-Dec. 10, 6-9:30 p.m.
This program prepares students to collect blood specimens from patients in a variety of settings. Students become familiar with all aspects of blood collection and develop comprehensives skills to perform venipunctures safely. Students work with a training arm, in a lab and perform live blood draws. While completing an externship is optional, it must be completed for the student to take the National Healthcareer Association Certified Phlebotomy examination.

• Registered Dental Assistant, $2,250
Morristown Campus – Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 9-Feb. 17, 6-9 p.m.
Niswanger Campus – Mondays and Wednesdays, Sept. 16-Feb. 24, 6-9 p.m.
This 120-hour course is approved by the Tennessee Board of Dentistry. This class includes the study of anatomy and physiology, tooth morphology, infection control and restorative dentistry. Students will also learn how to use radiology in the dental office. Students are required to complete 30 hours of observation in a dental office. After completion of this course, students will register as a dental assistant with the Tennessee Board of Dentistry.

All students enrolled in an allied health program are required to have the BLS/CPR and Bloodborne Pathogens certifications. This is offered every month on the Morristown and Sevier County campuses.
