Submarine USS Greeneville earns the Battle ‘E’, an award for top performers in battle efficiency and readiness to carry out missions and tasking. The Battle ‘E’ is the highest level award of the 9 in the Battle Efficiency awards. USS Greeneville also won the Engineering Readiness award (Red ‘E’) and the Personnel Readiness award (White ‘P’). The Battle Efficiency awards recognize submarines that have attained the highest overall/ departmental readiness to carry out their wartime tasks over the past year. The Battle Efficiency awards are given by COMSUBPAC, which stands for “Commander, Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet”, which oversees the entire Submarine Force in the U.S. Pacific.

As of last month, the USS Greeneville had arrived at a naval base in South Korea to replenish supplies and provide rest for crew members. Last summer, it was deployed after being stationed at its homeport San Diego, California for 4 years. It was in San Diego that USS Greeneville joined Squadron 11. The submarine had a homeport shift in May of 2024 from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii.  USS Greeneville moved to San Diego after a 30-month Engineered Overhaul (EOH) in Maine, which is a maintenance period conducted near the mid-point of a submarine’s life, ensuring the submarine operates at full technical and mission capability.

USS Greeneville was built in 1990 by the Virginia-based Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company. It is the only vessel in the United States Naval history named after Greeneville, TN. USS Greeneville is a Los Angeles class, meaning they are nuclear powered fast-attack submarines. Los Angeles class submarines have been regarded as the backbone of the submarine force for the past 40 years, according to the U.S. Navy’s website.

Greeneville is assigned to the U.S. 3rd Fleet, which leads naval forces in the Indo-Pacific and provides training to execute the Navy’s role across the all military operations, such as combat and humanitarian assistance, such as disaster relief.
