The Tusculum Board of Zoning Appeals approved a variance request of Michelle and Brandon Julian during their Tuesday meeting at Tusculum City Hall.
The five foot variance will allow for construction of a detached garage on the property at 1975 Erwin Highway. Dorothy and Bob Matthews, who live next door, were in attendance to argue against the variance, Dorothy Matthews voicing concerns, especially as it pertained to water runoff onto their property as a result of the addition.
Initially hesitant to recommend granting the variance, First Tennessee Development District Planner Conor Franklin did later make such a recommendation, following assurances from Tusculum Building Inspector Bill Rupert that any such concerns would be alleviated by the direction of down spouting which would be pitched toward the roadway. Julian will actually only need 3 1/2 feet of the approved five-foot variance for the project.
