You do not have to travel to New Orleans and visit the French Quarter to enjoy Mardi Gras.
Tusculum University is a great place to spend Tuesday, Feb. 13, in a more low-key manner. The English and Languages Department is holding a Fat Tuesday celebration at 7 p.m. at the Doak House Museum, located on the edge of campus. Fat Tuesday is the English translation of Mardi Gras.
Community members are invited to join Tusculum students, faculty and staff at the historic facility, located at 690 Erwin Highway, for an evening of great literature. Attendees can read from poetry, plays, novels and essays that capture Mardi Gras’ spirit. The event will unfold in an open mic format.
Guests are encouraged to dress in festive attire and eat delicious king cake as they engage in fellowship with other attendees.
“Our department loves to recognize this special day on the calendar by examining the written word,” said Dr. Josh Martin, assistant professor of English, who is organizing the event. “We welcome community participation and people’s contribution to the appreciation of outstanding literary works in multiple formats. It is also much cheaper than driving or flying to New Orleans.”
