Tractor Trailer Cut In Half When Struck By Train

There were no injuries when a tractor trailer was struck by a Norfolk Southern train Monday morning off Snapps Ferry Road just before 11:00 AM.

The driver told officers the accident happened when he turned off of Snapps Ferry Road onto Coile Street.  The crossing has flash lights which appeared to be operating.  The train struck the trailer portion of the semi, and cut it in half.  The cab and front end of the trailer was on the north side of the track with the rear of the trailer and wheels on the south side.

The train, at over a mile long, was headed northbound on the tracks, and came to a stop about 1/4 mile down the tracks.  The front railing of the engine had visible damage, but it was expected the train would be able to continue on.  The accident caused the blockage of the Coile Street and Bohannon Avenue crossing grades until after the wreckage was cleared.

Casper’s Wrecker Service used their large truck to lift the remains of the trailer off of the cab, and used another wrecker to pull the cab out of the ditch next to the tracks.  Once free from the ditch, the cab was driven away from the tracks and the wrecker lifted the trailer up onto the roadway where it was then loaded onto a flatbed.  The same process was used for the rear of the trailer.
