The Tennessee Department of Transportation is preparing Tennessee for the upcoming winter weather event this weekend by supplying all 95 counties with salt for the roads. According to NWS, ice accumulation is possible this weekend, due to freezing temperatures and high chances of precipitation.

TDOT has readied their trucks to salt interstates and major state routes, with over 231,000 tons of salt and more than 1.3 million gallons of salt brine ready for use. Greene County has many state routes, including: Andrew Johnson Highway, Jones Bridge Road, Erwin Highway, Chuckey Pike, Kingsport Highway, Lonesome Pine Trail, Baileyton Road, Warrensburg Road, Newport Highway, Asheville Highway, Houston Valley Road, 107 Cut-off, Fish Hatchery Road, and McDonald Road. Interstate 81 is also a major route that passes through Greeneville that TDOT will be prepared to treat. They encourage people to stay off the roads for all non-essential travel.

TDOT crews have also readied snowplows and brine trucks in case of heavy snow. TDOT ice and snow removal teams focus first on interstates and major state routes, specifically targeting areas vulnerable to freezing, such as hills, curves, ramps, bridges, and interchanges. Salt is applied to roads once snow accumulates.

Radio Greeneville will continue to keep you updated on the weather this weekend.
