A pop up thunderstorm took Greene County by surprise late Saturday night causing damage to trees and property, particularly near downtown Greeneville.
The thunderstorm swept through parts of Greene County between 11 p.m. and midnight on Saturday to the surprise of many after an evening of clear skies. The storm led to many downed trees, blocked roads, damaged cars, and some power outages due to damages to power lines. Greeneville Public Works and GEA crews worked through the night to repair damage from the storm and reopen streets.
Winds from the storm were strong enough to rip a column off the font porch of Jeffers Funeral and Cremation Service on College Street.
Storm damage was particularly evident in the areas around Doughty Avenue and Oak Grove Avenue.
Although the storm hit hard in downtown Greeneville, fortunately Independence Day festivities that had drawn thousands to downtown’s streets had already concluded. There were no injuries reported from the storm.
