The Sullivan County Board of Education has become the first area school system to say yes to the state funded $2,000 bonus for teachers.
The board Monday night voted unanimously to give their teachers the bonus called for in Governor Bill Lee’s Education Freedom Scholarship Act.
However, the school board maintained Monday night that it still does not agree with Gov. Lee’s voucher program as a whole, only Section 4 of the act calling for the bonus.
Both Greene County and Greeneville City Boards of Education have said they want their teachers to have the money as well, but are waiting on more defined plans from the state on what opting in actually means.
School systems across the state have until June 1st to opt in or out of the plan.
