The Greene County Sheriff’s Department is investigating after a student’s TikTok post was perceived as a threat at North Greene High School.
According to a press release issued Monday afternoon, the principal at North Greene High School received an email Sunday evening from a concerned citizen regarding an apparent threat at the school. The principal forwarded the email to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department and school resource officers.
An agent with the Tennessee Department of Homeland Security was immediately notified and a joint investigation was initiated. Officers gathered information and within a few hours contacted the student who made the TikTok post. The student told investigators he had posted it in response to a TikTok challenge. There was reportedly not a direct threat of violence against North Greene High School.
The investigation is still active and ongoing. Greene County Sheriff Wesley Holt and Greene County Director of Schools Dr. Chris Malone were actively monitoring and assisting in the investigation. Charges and discipline actions are pending the outcome of the investigation.
Sheriff Holt said in a statement that parents are asked to be involved in their students’ activities on social media. He added this incident could have been prevented if an adult was aware of what their child was posting.
