The Greene County Sheriff’s Department was first up to make budget requests for the 2025-2026 fiscal year.

Sheriff Wesley Holt and Chief Deputy David Beverly met with the Budget and Finance Committee this morning at the Annex.

SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT

For the first time during his tenure, Sheriff Holt says he is asking for four additional road officers.  Holt says increased call volume, more people moving into the area coupled with the drug epidemic.

The additions would add one more officer to each shift, bringing the total to 11 officers per shift.

Holt projects the cost for the four additional officers at $296,252, including benefits.

SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICERS

Greene County now has 22 school resource officers.  There are now SRO’s in each of the 15 Greene County schools, funded largely by the state mandate that every public school in Tennessee have such an officer in place.  In addition to $1,600 from the state in supplement pay to each of those officers, the county also receives $75,000 each year per SRO in each school for equipment and vehicles.  Plans are to use some of those state funds for the purchase of five new patrol vehicles to begin the process of staggering the SRO fleet.

JAIL/WORKHOUSE

There is no increase request for personnel in the jail/workhouse.  However, budget requests for body and car cameras for those on patrol and body cams for those at the jail are in need of replacement.
