The National Weather Service discusses severe weather and local impacts for this, the last day of Severe Weather Awareness Week.
Below are some tips on what to do before storms arrive to help mitigate impacts.
The following advisories are intended for wind storm events:
- Secure loose items
- Be cautious when driving as high winds impact high profile vehicles.
Winter weather event tips include:
- Prep ahead of the storm
- Make sure you have all the necessities in case roads become unsafe to travel
- Make sure you have a safe way to heat your home
- Add protection such as foam insulation around water pipes
- Leave water dripping
- Seal windows with plastic.
- Don’t forget your pets.
Follow the cleaning tasks below to prepare for brush, grass, or wildfires.
- Clean gutters and roof’s regularly
- Trim trees and shrubs
- Remove dead vegetation
- Space plants properly
- Clear around structures
- Keep areas around decks, sheds, and fences free of flammable debris.
- Check for flammable materials near vents.
To prepare for floods and flash floods, follow these home-related action tips:
- Clean gutters and downspouts regularly
- Elevate appliances and furniture
- Waterproof basements
- Install check valves which prevent sewer backups in sewer lines.
- Identify trouble spots
- Look for areas around your home where water tends to pool.
- Plant trees and create drainage swales to manage water flow.
- Consider flood insurance.
Follow these tips in the event of a current flood:
- Stay informed: Monitor weather reports and follow instructions from emergency officials.
- Evacuate if necessary,
- Do not drive through floodwaters: TURN AROUND DON’T DROWN
- Secure valuables
- Move important documents and belongings to a safe location, or in water proof containers.
In the event of a Earthquakes the following actions are recommended:
- Anchor items such as dressers, shelves, etc. to walls.
- Make sure your preparedness kit is stocked.
All disasters can affect roadways, supply chains, and utilities for days. Be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least 3 days. The recommended amount of days to be prepared for is 5 to 7 in order to have extra.
