Both Greeneville and Greene County Schools will be closed next week, September 30 through October 4, 2024. Greene County Director of Schools David McLain made the announcement on Saturday afternoon with the City schools following suit later that evening.
McLain said that with several bridges being closed and with expected water shortages, the closure was the only option. The following week is already scheduled as fall break, so Greene County students will not return to school until October 14.
McLain said no county schools received any significant damage.
Greeneville City Director of Schools Steve Starnes added that in the city, the system will be serving meals at Greeneville High School. They will be distributed curbside on Monday September 30 and Wednesday October 2 between 12 PM and 2 PM. Between these two pickup days, a total of five breakfasts and five lunches will be provided. All bridges to the south side of the county are closed, and all schools except two are serviced by water provided by the Greeneville Water Commission. Since the pump house has been destroyed and water reserves will be depleted, the decision was made to close schools.
The following week is scheduled for Fall Break. Schools will not resume until October 14.
