The Greene County Board of Education met yesterday afternoon and heard a presentation from Save The Children, a non profit organization that is also a charity helping children in the county.
The presentation shared their goals and accomplishments, including data from the organization. Board members expressed how much of a difference the charity has made in so many kids lives. Save The Children serves Greene and Cocke County and Director of Schools David McLain said they have been in partnership with Greene County for five years. It all first started after Assistant Director of Schools Dr. Bill Ripley visited Cocke County.
According to Lead Associate of Community Engagement Misty Stewart, Save The Children contributed over $1.5 million to programming in Greene County. The funds went towards programs in the community like after school programs, early steps, community engagement etc. There are over 60 positions that support the programs, including tutors and coordinators all in the community. In 2022 the organization reached over 16,200 children and almost 36,000 adults. They distributed more than 40,000 books and early learning materials, had 126 total initiatives and activities, have held or supported 82 community events and served 11,000 meals.
Save The Children also donated a $320,000 Mobile Feeding Unit Grant, which you may have seen or could be seeing soon. The food truck is called Taste and Free, and Stewart said if you see the truck roll up in your neighborhood they are there to proving food, support, and will set up tables completely free. Eventually they will incorporate early learning and fun education activities.
