Democratic State Representative Gloria Johnson spoke to members of the local Greene County Democratic Party and Greene County Democratic Women’s Club on Thursday night.
Johnson, who represents District 90 in Knox County in the Tennessee House of Representatives, spoke to a crowd of about 80 people in the lyceum at Walters State Community College in Greeneville.
In her remarks, Johnson addressed national and state legislative matters, including several issues impacting healthcare in Tennessee.
She noted that Tennessee’s continued refusal to expand Medicaid has cost the state billions of federal dollars that it would have received to cover 90% of the expansion. Tennessee is one of only 10 states to not have expanded Medicaid. She also noted that recent cuts to Medicaid had resulted in thousands losing insurance coverage in Tennessee.

Johnson also addressed educations issues, including the state’s controversial private school voucher program championed by Governor Bill Lee, budgetary challenges, infrastructure issues, housing the ongoing affordability crisis and more.
During the course of her speech, Johnson said she was speaking to directly refute several claims Rep. David Hawk made recently at a meeting of the Greene County Republican Party about the current state of Tennessee’s government, budget, economy, and other matters. She also responded to a remark Hawk made to the local GOP about local liberals meeting “in a phone booth” in town.
