Road and bridge work continues locally and across the area as the recovery from the September flooding continues.

A main thoroughfare from Tennessee to North Carolina is moving closer to reopening, if only partially.

Albeit one lane both ways and at a reduced speed, the North Carolina Department of Transportation expects a portion of I-40 at the Tennessee/North Carolina state line could be open as soon as the beginning of January.

The highway however, will still be limited with narrower 11-foot lanes and a reduced speed limit of 40 miles per hour over the 9 mile stretch. NC DOT initially shut down more than 40 miles of the highway – between exit 432 in Tennessee and exit 20 in North Carolina.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says the temporary fixes will be followed by planned changes to that stretch of I-40, to address increased truck traffic, vehicle sizes, and natural disasters.
