3:40 PM UPDATE – Testimony began at 2:00 pm today following the lunch break until a short break just after 3:30. Greeneville Police Assistant Chief Eddie Key, the victims widow Heather and GPD retired Detective Sgt. Stacy Hobbs had testified before the break following opening statements from the state and the defense.
The South Carolina man already sentenced to life without the possibility of parole in a Florida double murder, still wants his “day in court” in Tennessee.
That day, and possibly up to two or three days began this morning when jury selection got underway in the first degree murder trial for 42 year old Stanley Eric Mossburg in Greene County Criminal Court.
A jury of eight men and four women was seated at around 11:30 am, about two and half hours after court began.
Mossburg is charged in the October 2, 2019 murder of 33 year old Christopher Scott Short of Greeneville. He is alleged to have killed Short at what was then known as the Celebrity Coin Laundry in Greeneville, then fled to Florida where he murdered a man and a woman in their home.
In 2024, he was found guilty of the Florida murders and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. The state had been seeking the death penalty.
Here in Greene County Mossburg is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of especially aggravated robbery in connection with the death of Short.
Mossburg had remained in custody in Florida until he was transported back to Greene County earlier this year. He is seated along side his defense attorney Hunter Shelton in the courtroom today.
The presiding Judge is Alex Pearson.
