Around 350 Greene County property owners whose homes and properties were destroyed and/or damaged by the September flooding can soon receive their 2024 property tax bill monies back from the state.

Greene County Assessor of Property Chuck Jeffers attended a meeting along with other area county Assessors last week at the state Comptrollers office.

The plan also benefits Greene County as a whole , as the money headed back to property owners, will not impact the county budget , as the money is coming from the state coffers.

Jeffers does remind everyone, even those affected by the flooding, to go ahead and pay their taxes in full by the deadline this Friday, February 28th.

—

Because of state law all the tax bills had to be prepared by September 1st , because the county governments had already set their budgets, so there was  nothing local government could do to adjust property tax assessments or bills that were already being shipped out that month.  The legislation, approved during the special legislative sessions led to the plan to reimburse those that lost their homes and property for their total tax bill for 2024 plus 30%
