A local community leader and retired United Methodist Church minister, Mark Wills, is preparing for his annual September ride to support the Children’s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF).
The CCRF is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to funding research on treatments that are more effective and less toxic for children with cancer. The CCRF also supports programs that provide comfort and care to families during treatments and survivorship.
This year, Mark Wills is biking 1,000 miles in honor of a young boy, Smiley Riley, whose inspiring journey was highlighted on the iconic Big Screen in New York City’s Times Square earlier this week.
Riley’s picture was displayed on the Times Square jumbotron on Wednesday at 1:45 PM. The moment is sponsored by the Great Cycle Challenge (GCC) USA, an event that brings together thousands of riders across the country to fight childhood cancer.
“This is more than just a bike ride for me; it’s a profound act of solidarity and a way to channel my passion into a purpose that truly matters,” said Wills. “Riley’s strength and resilience are a constant reminder of why we do this. Having his face on the big screen in Times Square is a powerful statement about the hope that fuels our work. It’s a moment to celebrate him and all the children who are fighting for their futures.”
The rider, who serves as a Walters State Community College dean, encourages local businesses, community members, and students to join him in supporting this critical cause. The funds raised will directly support CCRF’s mission to fund research and provide resources for families affected by childhood cancer.
