The Greeneville Greene County Public Library kicked off its annual Summer Reading Program with a strong start during its first week of activities. Held on Tuesday, May 27, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the first of six planned weekly events welcomed over 175 children and their families for a morning of interactive learning and creativity centered around the theme “Painting in Color.”

Library staff and volunteers guided attendees through a variety of artistic activities, including story readings, color theory demonstrations, and hands-on crafts such as puffy paint ice cream cone creations. Local painter Heather Jones was also on-site to demonstrate her painting techniques and answer questions from young artists and their families.

Later in the week, on the afternoon of Thursday, May 29, the library hosted its first teen event of the summer: a “Bad Art Afternoon.” Teen participants were encouraged to think outside the box and embrace creative freedom in crafting intentionally unconventional artworks. A selection of the resulting pieces is currently on display at the library.

The Summer Reading Program will continue for five more weeks, featuring a different artistic theme each Tuesday. The next event, scheduled for Tuesday, June 3, will explore “Fiber and 3D Arts,” with special guests from Greene County Makers offering demonstrations and interactive activities.

In addition to weekly events, participants of all ages can register for the program to log their reading and complete activity booklets filled with educational and engaging content. Registered readers are also eligible to win prizes at the end of the program.

For more information and to register, visit the library’s website or contact the Greeneville Greene County Public Library at 423-638-5034.
