Mark Nagi with TDOT reminds motorists that on Saturday, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will reopen I-40 at the TN/NC state line, permitting travel on that interstate for the first time since Hurricane Helene last September. One lane will be open in each direction.
Narrowed lane reductions are in place in both directions between MM 446 in Tennessee and MM 7 in North Carolina. Traffic more than 8 1/2 feet in width is prohibited through this area.
Motorists should expect potential long delays and be prepared for slowed or stopped traffic. I-40 thru traffic should continue to follow I-81 North to I-26 East or I-77 South to avoid such delays.
The road remains an active work zone. as TDOT AND NCDOT continue efforts to restore I-40 to full capacity in Tennessee and North Carolina.
