Alan and Marie Marsh are both seeking seats on the Greene County Commission this year.
By the way, Alan and Marie Marsh of East Andrew Johnson Highway in Chuckey, are husband and wife.
Both had their qualifying petitions approved by the Election Commission on Tuesday.
Alan, who is the Treasurer of the Greene County Republican Party, will be on the ballot in May for District 2 Commissioner, running as a Republican.
Marie however is running as an independent in the 2nd District and as such won’t be on the ballot until August, running against the three Republican nominees from May.
As Radio Greeneville News reached out to the couple for a photo and comment last night, Marie Marsh asked and answered a couple of questions which have already come up about her campaign:
Question: Why are you running against your husband for District 2 Commissioner?
Answer: “I’m running with my husband. We are one, but I am independent of my husband. I have my own passions and commitments, like fighting for our Constables. I started Friends of the Constables in hopes others in our community will join me. I am an extension of my husband, whom I believe to be brilliant. Either one of us or both of us will bring integrity to the Commission board.”
Question: Why are you running as an Independent?
Answer: “Even though I’m running as an Independent on the ballot, it doesn’t change who I am as a person. I’ve voted Republican my whole life. Unlike some of our candidates, I’ve never voted as a Democrat. Also, I consider myself much more conservative than most of the Republican candidates, including those who are seeking higher offices. I’m a conservative Christian first. I love my Country and am a proud Constitutionalist. I hold most if not all of the beliefs of the Republican GOP but there’s much more to me than a scarlet letter R label. Since my husband is running as a Republican, I figured running as an Independent was the better choice for me. I believe our community and society as a whole should be looking for candidates with true conservative morals and not just because you think they’re a nice person or because you hang around the same crowd. There are always fake people among our midst. I believe I have proven my character and morals to those who know of me. I hope to prove the same to our community if given a chance. Speaking of independence; Aren’t we all considered independent? We all are independently unique rather we’re a sheep or a shepherd. Choices are ours and we will rise or fall because of them. Some people call it karma, I call it reaping and sowing(Galatians 6:7). I like being a part of my community and helping out in the political arena.”
