Campgrounds in both Horse Creek and Paint Creek Recreation Areas in the Cherokee National Forest in Greene County are closed due to storm damage the U.S. Forest Service announced Monday afternoon.
Horse Creek had already seen some damage in early June when a flash flood destroyed part of a walking path and a campsite in the park. Horse Creek Recreation Area was hit hard again during recent heavy rains
Lower Paint Creek Road was damaged near Joe Pye Lane during the rains, which led to the closure of the campground in Paint Creek Recreation Area. A large portion of the road collapsed near the entrance to the Paint Creek Corridor due to heavy rains and flooding that took place over the weekend.
