The Greenville Board of Mayor and Alderman met yesterday morning along with others for their retreat.

On the agenda was the Greenville Strategic plan for 2021, which included goals adopted by the board like facilitating reasonably priced broadband throughout the community. City Administrator Todd Smith said the town has contributed $500,000 into that project. He says Broadband is in some areas in Greeneville, but hasn’t been turned on yet. He believes it will definitely be making a change in history.

Other goals included making changes to the Town’s Charter by the end of 2023, to take to State legislature during 2024. Smith has stated that the process has been started and a resolution was made for the charter change.

A goal that’s been met with the help of Assistant City Administrator Cathy Osborne was to develop a civics-shadowing program for the youth. This program would include 10-12 youth members, members of the student council to be engaged, job shadowing with Town employees, and more annual projects.

Osborne said a lot of those students have attended several meetings including Board of Mayor and Aldermen meetings and they are currently working on a project that will be presented to the BMA in one of the next meetings. They meet every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month. Osborne said the program has been going very well and they have met all goals that have been set.

Another goal was to finish the downtown re-development project. The goal was originally set so citizens could have a place to be proud of. Phase 1 of the Depot Street Project was to be completed by 2023, and Phase 2 within 3-8 years. City Administrator Smith stated that project has been moving along and is on track for the fall of 2023.

An important goal although all are important, included improving gateways like working on more roads downtown, improving lighting, landscaping, murals, things that will help highlight entrances to the community. Smith added that once the Depot Street project starts coming to an end, they could than focus on some of these gateways.
