Greeneville Police Chief Josh Pierce updated Greeneville City Council members Tuesday on electric bike classifications and laws pertaining to them.

Chief Pierce updated the county on concerns voiced by the public earlier this summer over E-bikes, what was allowed and what wasn’t allowed and new legislation passed July first as it related to such bikes.

Pierce reported School Resource Officer Larry Gilbert addressed conducted a class for students related to bike safe during the SRO Camp and is continuing those efforts during the school year.

Pierce reported they “there were enough calls at the beginning of the summer that we knew something was wrong, there was concern, so we knew something needed to be done, and it seems like we don’t have that many calls or concerns coming in. It seems like parents understand the classifications, and what you can and can’t do, and what you need or don’t need. I think that helped parents’ kind of understand what they can allow.”

Golf carts and four wheelers have also been on the increase in residential areas this summer. Pierce said any vehicle must be street legal, registered and be operated by a licensed driver. As it pertains to the E-Bikes, a list of precautions was also presented.
