A man was taken to the hospital on Monday evening after reportedly getting shot multiple times at a residence on the 600 block of Bear Hollow Road. He is currently in critical condition, according to a Greene County Sheriff’s Office press release. The reported assailant, Claude “Junior” West, fled the scene but was apprehended by deputies, without incident, a short time later in Hawkins County.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office arrived at about 7 PM at the property and found the 42 year-old victim Nathan Poe laying in the back yard. Poe was allegedly in and out of consciousness and said he was dying. A deputy said it appeared as if Poe had four bullet wounds. EMS arrived on the scene and flew him to the Johnson City Medical Center.
Witnesses said a man named Claude West was at the residence and stated he said he shot the victim before leaving. Blood spots were reportedly located on the floor by the backdoor. A gun was also recovered by a deputy.
A tip lead deputies to find West in a vehicle on the 800 block of Browns Mountain Road. He and a male passenger were held at gunpoint. West was detained and taken to the Greene County Detention Center. West, age 68, is being charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder and is being held with a $400,000 bond. He is set to appear for arraignment in Greene County Sessions Court on May 29, 2024.
