A Greeneville man has been charged for the vandalism of a mural and wall at the intersection of Church Street and Bernard Avenue last week.
According to the Greeneville Police Department, a tip was received that the suspect may be 21-year-old Brhenon J. Hickman of Revonda Circle, who is in custody at the Greene County Detention Center. He had been arrested after the vandalism incident on a violation of probation charge related to possession of synthetic urine to falsify a drug test.
Hickman was interviewed and reportedly admitted to spray painting the mural and the wall at the intersection of Church Street and Bernard Avenue. The mural of notable woman of Greene County was heavily damaged with profanity and other markings in the early morning hours of Thursday, July 16. Hickman stated he did not know why he vandalized the wall and denied knowing what the mural represented.
The original police report of the incident stated the Phillips 66 gas station at the intersection had a camera that showed the offense location, but it was at a distance. It was requested they review the video to see if the offense was captured.
Hickman will be arraigned on the felony vandalism charge on Wednesday, July 22 at 8:30 am at the Greene County Courthouse.
The mural was painted earlier this year by art students from Greeneville High School and has since been restored by the same students. Art teacher Rachel Redmon, along with some of the students who painted that mural, will be interviewed live on 99.5 FM WGRV on Tuesday, July 21 following the 10:00 am news.
