A Greeneville man was arrested with driving under the influence and possession of a handgun on Thursday after it was reported someone crashed into a vehicle that was parked, and the driver was passed out.
The Greeneville Police Department responded to the Waffle House on the 2700 block of the East Andrew Johnson Highway around 8:30 PM. The driver Marcus A. Laws was reportedly found passed out with the vehicle still in gear. Laws finally woke up after an officer knocked on the window. A strong odor of alcohol was detected when he opened the door.
Laws admitted to drinking about an hour prior to speaking with the officer. According to the report, when speaking with Laws his speech was slurred and lethargic, and he was struggling to stay awake. Laws also allegedly had a pistol on the floorboard by his feet loaded with a round in the chamber.
No sobriety tests were given for safety reasons as Laws almost fell several times and was unsteady on his feet. EMS was requested to the scene but he reportedly refused treatment. He was arrested and taken to jail, where he blew a .173 on his breath sample.
