The Greeneville City School Board of Education discussed a budget deficit during their meeting on Monday afternoon. The school board met last week for a budget workshop where they revealed there was a $507,883 deficit. The school boards General Purpose Budget for 2024-2025 currently shows a total of $36,954,877 for revenues and equity and $37,462,760 for expenses, resulting in the $507,883 deficit.
Since then, cost cutting measures were proposed in the schools’ fund balance that would reduce that deficit to $241,683. The proposed items to cut from the fund balance include:
- 10% of the boards’ safety goal to increase safety each year for $6,200
- board goal to increase capital expenditures, representing $120,000
- device replacements, a recurring budgeted item for $110,000
- match funding for E-Rate Program in the amount of $30,000.
The cuts totaled $266,200, a reduction of almost half of the deficit. The school board voted to approve the amended budget for the 2024-2025 Fiscal Year and will present it to the Greeneville City Council this afternoon. It was apparent to the board that numbers weren’t where they should be or where they wanted it to be. Board member Josh Quillen said it was important to note that money has been added to the fund balance a little bit at a time. The budget reflects the Administrative Leadership Team and the Board of Education’s best efforts to address the needs of Greeneville City Schools as well as meet State and Federal requirements.
Vice-Chairperson Dr. Craig Shepherd said the school needed a lending hand and costs were already cut to the bone but now the bone is cut in half. More money will most likely be requested. The board presents a budget to the city council annually based off the latest information available. Chairperson Cindy Luttrell also felt that the school would need more money in the budget. She said education is not a money maker and like everyone else, they also want to take care of their staff.
Besides the budget discussion, the majority of the meeting was spent recognizing students.
