The Greeneville City Council will consider partial funding for the cost of roof replacement at the Greeneville/Greene County Public Library during their Tuesday meeting.
The Greene County Budget and Finance Committee unanimously voted last Wednesday to fund half of the cost of the needed roof replacement, pending a funding match from the Town of Greeneville for the other half of the cost.
The town received five bids for the replacement of the roof, and the lowest bid for the project was a $138,000 bid from Idell Construction.
The Greene County government allocates $138,000 annually to the library to help fund operations, while the Town of Greeneville allocates around $200,000. The Town of Greeneville acts as the fiscal agent for the library and manages its operations.
Library officials asked in June for the county to increase its annual contribution to $145,000 for the current fiscal year, however, the members of the Budget and Finance Committee said they would like to look into funding part of the replacement cost for the library’s roof instead of increasing the county’s annual allocation to the library.
The committee took action to follow through on that idea with its action last Wednesday.
The County Commission would consider the county portion of the funding resolution at its Sept. 21 meeting after the Tuesday meeting of the City Council.
If the funding were to be approved for the roof repair by both governing bodies it would be the second time in as many fiscal years that Greene County would be allocating additional funding to the library for maintenance projects. Greene County provided about $48,000 in additional funding to the library in fiscal year 2025-26 to address a failing sewer system that had rendered some of the library’s bathroom unusable.
