The Greeneville City Council approved an ordinance to amend the Town of Greeneville Municipal Code Section 2-105 of Title 2, which limits the number of licensed retailers allowed to sell alcoholic beverages in town.
The ordinance is to set perimeters and now will only allow one liquor store/one permit per 5,000 residents. There are six liquor stores currently and all six locations have been approved, which won’t be affected by this ordinance. City Administrator Todd Smith said we would have to reach the 30,000 population before there’s another liquor store approved in town. According to the ordinance, the location of the retailers is subject to the discretion of the city council.
Councilman Tim Teague made a motion to table the resolution to appoint someone for the vacancy on the Industrial Development Board of Greene County for a six-year term. Teague asked if there could be more time so further information could be provided on who can actually sit on the IDB board. Candidates include Paige Mengel, Danny Venerable, Shane Hite, and John Loven.
The city council approved a special event sign request for the event Jogging for Jess 5K Run/Walk on August 10th. It will be held at Tusculum University. Also approved was the request to close streets for the American Downtown Celebration on June 29th and the purchase of a cardiac monitor for the Greeneville Fire Department.
